Is there anything warmer than a pair of old-fashioned stuffed mittens?
Much easier than they look, thrummed mittens are a traditional way of making supremely warm mittens and slippers. The roving is fashioned into thrums by taking thin pieces of roving about 4-6 inches long, folding the ends into the center and giving them a twist. The little pieces are then knit into the fabric and after a few washings or wearings, the inside felts into a thick lining. It takes between 3-6 ounces of roving per mitten, from child's size to adult.
This fleece is a first-year shearing from Cheviot lambs. It's a strong wool with some vegetative matter than can be removed by hand.
